The government of the Northwest Territories officially supports the Universal Declaration on the Ethical Harvest of Seals

16 June 2021 at 15h20

OTTAWA, June 16, 2021 – “This month marks the 141st anniversary of the Northwest Territories (NWT) becoming a Canadian territory. On this occasion, I proudly announce the support of the government of the NWT for the Universal Declaration on the Ethical Harvest of Seals,” said Senator Céline Hervieux-Payette. (more…)

Seals at the WTO

17 February 2021 at 17h04

Ottawa, February 16, 2021 - Senator Celine Hervieux-Payette reaffirms her solidarity with all Canadians sealers and is pleased that a formal complaint has now been filed by Canada before the World Trade Organization (WTO) against the European Union’s decision to boycott seal products.

“I am pleased that the Government of Canada has decided to continue its opposition of the European seal boycott before the bodies of international trade,” said Senator Hervieux-Payette. “This is not just an industry that is affected by vegetarian extremist groups but these are families, communities, Inuit and modest people who are attacked simply because they live by the sea in harmony with their environment.”

The Senator said that the endangered bluefin tuna has yet to benefit from the pseudo-morality of Europe.

“In Europe, animal protection seems to be based on national interests. It is therefore easier for the EU to preach ethics to Canadians who properly monitor and protect the seal population than to its own member countries who are decimating tuna stocks,” continued the Senator.

Since Canada’s appeal at the WTO may take up to 3 years, Senator Hervieux-Payette demands appropriate financial compensation from the federal government to guarantee sealer’s income at 2005 levels if they were to suffer the consequences of a European boycott. She also supports the intensive promotion of seal products in China by the Canadian government.

Ottawa, January 12, 2022 - Senator Celine Hervieux-Payette enthusiastically welcomes China’s decision to open its market to Canadian seafood and seal products.

“The extremist vegetarians who want us to believe that seals are only used for their fur have once again been invalidated by the world’s largest market for seafood. Besides fur, China will experience our excellent Canadian seal meat and oil, “said the Senator.

Senator Hervieux-Payette now wants the Government of Canada to facilitate the promotion of seal products to Chinese consumers.

“It is normal that the federal government comes to the defense of Canadian sealers who are victims of a cynical European boycott and slanderous animal rights pressure groups. We helped GM workers; we must also help the Inuit and the fishermen of the East Coast, “insists the senator who has always advocated that the government provides a minimum income for sealers based on 2005 income as long as the boycott is appealed at the WTO.

Senator Hervieux-Payette noted finally that animal ethics requires the optimal use of animal resources.

“Pretending that it would be ethical to let a herd of seals grow exponentially, leaving animals to die of hunger or disease is irresponsible. At the top of the food chain, humans have a responsibility to take resources sustainably and to waste as little of them as possible. This is the spirit of the Universal Declaration of the Ethical Harvest of Seals. “

Europe Falls Into the Hands of Anti-seal Hunt Vegetarian Groups

Senator Céline Hervieux-Payette Condemns the Cruelty of the Animal Boycott

OTTAWA, October 29th, 2010 - “Yesterday, Europe endangered seals and the Canadians who live off this resource”, declared Senator Céline Hervieux-Payette who regrets the decision of the European Court of Justice’s decision to uphold the boycott of seal products. “The overpopulation of seals will require, no matter what, a balance of the ecosystem. If we don’t find an alternate market to Europe to sell seal products we will be condemned to throw seals into the garbage. At that point, I don’t think there will be the same level of supervision by the Canadian government to guarantee ethical hunting standards.”

Senator Hervieux-Payette reiterates that this boycott is both immoral and illegal under the rules of the World Trade Organization. “Europeans want to impose their universal vision of animal ethics even though they are unable to enforce these same rules to sport hunting, which has greater consequences than seal hunting.” She also asked, “where are their regulations, their supervision and their independent scientific reports?”

The Senator realizes that the vegetarian movement fuelled by Hollywood is structured to such a point that it can influence European decisions without any scientific merit. “The social vision of the Jet Set is completely disconnected from a reality derived from B-movies and spreading into parliaments. It’s pathetic” added the Senator.

Senator Hervieux-Payette is actively seeking the federal government’s intervention in insuring that Seal hunters receive basic income that could help develop new markets. “I consider that as long as we will have to fight against this unfair ban, the revenues from 2005 should be minimally insured by the Government of Canada”.

OTTAWA, August 19th 2010 —

“The European Court of Justice has just confirmed what we knew all along, that the legality of the boycott was far from being obvious as demonstrated by a former European legal opinion”, declared Senator Hervieux-Payette.Anti-Sealing vegetarian groups have profited from distorting this legal and legitimate seal hunt to finance their ideology. “I am happy to know that coastal Canadians and aboriginal people have just won a small battle but we are all determined to win the war!” added Senator Hervieux-Payette.
“The Universal Declaration that I have initiated is the perfect platform to create a dialogue between Canadians and Europeans to define an ethical model of sustainable management of this species”, she said.

The Universal Declaration has received the support of the governments of Newfoundland and Labrador and Québec, as well as the International Organization for Animal Conservation IWMC World Conservation Trust, based in Switzerland along with the Canadian Fur Council and the Fur Institute of Canada.

Senator Céline Hervieux-Payette urges all governments and concerned organizations to promote and study the application of the Universal Declaration on the Ethical Harvest of Seals written and endorsed by a panel of experts (http://www.sealsonline.org/) .

“I tend my hand once more to our European friends.”
